The Flettner Rotor using the Magnus Effect on a rotating column installed on a shiṕs deck converts the power of the wind into thrust in a direction approximately perpendicular to the wind direction. There are opportunities to save up to 25 per cent of fuel costs on an ocean going vessel, producing a payback in a three to five year period. Few people want these huge rotors sticking up all the time causing difficulties loading and unloading of the vessel, and problems regarding low bridges and unfavorable wind conditions. The Singapore based company WindAgain has come up with a solution by producing a range of Collapsible Flettner Rotors (CFR). Their patented system allows the rotor to function normally yet be folded down on to the deck when not required. [More]
