GE Turbines Offer Hybrid Solutions

GE is offering hybrid propulsion systems for military and commercial applications based on its LM series gas turbines using electric motors and drives, to reduce noise and emissions through improved fuel economy. GE has a wide experience of hybrid systems, acting as systems integrator, GE is able to team with other industry suppliers to provide all electric propulsion solutions. A particularly successful combination with gas turbines is the CODAG or CODOG arrangement where diesel engines are employed at low output with the gas turbine(s) only used to produce boost power. As the cost of fuel increases, such solutions are not limited to newbuilds, repowering of existing vessels can also provide tangible financial benefits. Successful Sea Trials of Fast Attack Craft

GE Marine has recently reported the successful sea trials of two new patrol vessels built by STX Jinhae, South Korea using gas turbines in combination with diesel engines. The vessels concerned are number eight and nine of the Republic of Korea Navy projected fleet of twenty Gumdoksuri Class, Fast Attack Craft. The 570 ton vessels have an LOA of 206 ft (63 m), beam of 29.5 ft (9 m) and draft of 16.4 ft (5 m). Propulsion is provided by two MTU 16V 1163 TB93 diesels and a single boost waterjet connected to two GE LM500 gas turbines, giving a maximum speed of 40+ kn. [More]
