The strong winds prevalent in European coastal waters, especially in the North Sea offer good opportunities for wind resistance reduction. Two new car carriers for Euro Marine Carrier, a subsidiary of Nissan to transport new vehicles to Northern Europe offered a good opportunity to develop a vessel with lower wind resistance. Kyushu University developed a ship design with a Semi Spherical Shaped (SSS) bow that proved to be able to reduce wind resistance by up to 50 per cent less than that of conventional designs. Construction of the new vessel MV City of St Petersburg was completed in 2010 by the Kyokuyo Shipyard Corporation in 2010
