Marine Diesel engines have a remarkable ability to work with a variety of fuels, ranging from Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) to Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) as well as a range of distillates of refined crude oil in between. Not surprisingly the ship-owner's fuel of choice for large two-stroke Diesel engines over the years has been HFO, the low-price by-product of oil refinery output. Marine Diesel engines, thanks to enormous technological strides in the past few decades, have proven themselves powerful, reliable and efficient, to the extent that by year 2000 motor ships composed no less than 98% of the merchant fleet. STX Finland, Viking Line Sign Agreement for $330m Cruise Ferry

STX Finland Oy and Viking Line ABP have signed a preliminary agreement for the construction of a new generation cruise ferry for Viking Line. The agreement includes an option for a sister ship. The ship price will be about $330m, and will be built at Turku shipyard for delivery in the beginning of 2013. [More]

Using LNG as a fuel can offer a practical and economic solution for the ship operator. Operating a ship using a fuel in a gas state requires integration of the entire chain from shipside bunkering, storage, conditioning and delivery to the engine and its conversion into power. Within a period of a few weeks, builders of dual fuel engines Wärtsilä and MAN have published their own solutions to this question. Both systems allow the ship owner to deliver/complete dual fuel with LNG propulsion system from one manufacturer and have the reassurance that the entire system is compatible including bunkering and on board storage.
