At present there arise the largest Bilobe-Liquid Gas Storage tanks.They are nearing completion at China’s Sinopacific yard and will be installed in a series of four 27,500 cu m semi-refrigerated LNG/Ethylene carriers building for Denmark’s Shipping Company Evergas. Each of the IMO Type C Bilobe tanks has a capacity of 9,686 cu m. MAN Diesel & Turbo show new 4T50ME-GI LPG dual fuel research engine.

Earlier this year, MAN Diesel & Turbo announced its plans for a program of ME-GI testing during 2011 at the company’s Diesel Research Centre in Copenhagen Denmark. The 4T50ME-X R&D research engine has been rebuilt as a 4T50ME-GI specification engine, to carry out ME-GI dual fuel testing on LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) and HDO.fuels. Operation on dual fuel requires the injection of both pilot fuel and gas fuel into the combustion chamber. Comparison of emission levels shows that there are benefits in the full range when using LPG as fuel: a 17 per cent reduction in CO2, 12 per cent reduction in NOx,, a 92 per cent reduction in SOx and a 37 per cent reduction in particulates. 'Refiners threaten anti-pollution efforts in shipping', blared the caption of a Reuters article by correspondents Kan and Fabi on 17, January 2011, then coincidentally, came news a couple of days later that Wärtsilä was to retrofit the Containerships Vll, 13,995 dwt,  (owned by Helsinki based Containerships Ltd. OY) with their diesel engine exhaust-gas scrubber. Wärtsilä's first ever installation of a commercial marine scrubber (to serve their W7L64 main diesel engine) is intended to enable the ship to meet impending targets for reduced exhaust gas emissions of SOx in Emission Control Areas's while continuing to burn diesel fuel with sulfur content above the set limits. New Era for Tanker Shipping

Yesterday in London, the DNV classification society unveiled the Triality VLCC concept vessel. The vessel is fueled by liquified natural gas (LNG), has a special hull shape that does not require the use of ballast water and virtually eliminates harmful exhaust emissions. A further bonus is its attention to the problem of vapors emitted by the cargo and providing a solution to use them. The LNG fuel carried is sufficient for 25 000 nautical miles of operation. The new vee shaped hull with revised cargo tank layout dispenses with the use of ballast water in the empty condition: rendering a higher net efficiency for a round trip. Cargo vapors are collected , liquefied and stored as LPG for later use during the trip. DNV estimate that the capital cost of their new design will be 10-15 per cent more however the through life cost saving will be 25 per cent less than an equivalent VLCC of conventional design.
