MAN’s New EcoCam reduces fuel consumption

MAN EcoCam further optimises slow-steaming concept MAN Diesel & Turbo has introduced the MAN EcoCam as a retrofit solution for the low-load optimisation of its low-speed, mechanical engines with single turbochargers. DNV GL stamps Methanol powered Tanker

The worldwide first with Methanol powered vessels will navigate with DNV GL Class the classification society announced recently. The four 50.000 tdw tanker have been ordered by the Swedish shipping company Marinvest and the Norwegian company Westfal-Larsen at the Korean shipyard Hyundai Mipo Dockyards. The classification follows according the DNV GL regulation for fuels with low flashpoint. The very first tank ship shall be delivered by 2016.DNV GL says the sulfur free fuel with low flashpoint (Low Flashpoint, LFL) of about twelve degrees Celsius becomes more and more attractive for the maritime industry, because this fuel fulfills the upcoming SOx-limit values in the emission control areas.The vessels, which will carry the additional DNV GL mark LFL FUELLED, feature a secondary bunker system as well as an automatically leakage warning system with shot-off function and flame protection systems. Sister Ship of the “Norwegian Breakaway”, the “Norwegian Getaway” delivered

After transfer from Southampton service as a hotel vessel at the “Super Bowl” in New York – First cruises in the Caribbean During a ceremony at the beginning of January 2014 in Bremerhaven, Norwegian Cruise Line took delivery of the 145,655 gross ton cruise ship Norwegian Getaway from MEYER WERFT after a building period of only 15 months. The ship, the second of two Breakaway Class ships, is being delivered just nine months after the launch of sister-ship Norwegian Breakaway. Following delivery today, the ship is sailing to Rotterdam for the start of inaugural festivities which will continue in Southampton before the ship departs for her transatlantic cruise to New York. The ship will be christened in Miami on February 7.The cruise liner starts the first transfer from Southampton to New York with around 1.500 crew members from over 60 nations. At slow steaming cold corrosion can occur – Castrol sees concerns by specifications given from the engine manufacturers confirmed. Many shipping owners go for slow steaming. But to avoid long term damages by slow steaming particular adjustments must be done. One aspect is the use of optimized lubricating oils. A possible problem is cold corrosion. The lubricating oil manufacturer, e.g., Castrol Marine assumes that, during slow steaming, cold corrosion can happen if lube oils with lower base numbers (BN) come together with fuels with higher sulphur content. “We always point out that oils with lower BN are unsuitable for slow steaming with modern diesel engines. Both market leading OEM’s have now created specific guide lines, which go along with our experiences”, says Castrol manager Paul Harrold. The multi-functional construction and pipelay vessel Ceona Amazon, which will be built by Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven AG for the British operator Ceona, will be equipped with two 9L32/44CR engines and four 8L32/44CR main gensets, providing a total output of 28MW. This was recently announced by MAN Diesel & Turbo who had won the order. Based on a drill-ship design, the 33,000gt, 199.4m-long and 32.2m-wide Ceona Amazon boasts exceptional sea-keeping characteristics, making it ideal for operations in remote and challenging locations, the engine manufacturer noted. The milestone was reached with the order of two common-rail variants of the engine by Huta Marine of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia as part of a diesel-electric system to power a self-propelled cutter suction dredger.  Huta Marine is a specialist in marine infrastructure and its fleet ranks among the largest in the Middle East.
