The MARLIN series of three designs of a new generation of container feeders was unveiled this week by Wärtsilä Ship Design developed in cooperation with DNV and the UK Graig shipping group. Claiming to be environmentally sustainable, competitively priced and fuel efficient, in money terms this equates to a 30 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency per TEU. The design benefits from an improved capacity with greater loading flexibility of different container types including a high reefer capacity. The series is offered in three variants with the current MARLIN 2000 Blue design of approximately 2,000 TEU capacity, aimed towards the high growth inter Asia trade routes. Two other slightly larger future designs of approximately 2,500 TEU capacity have been developed to meet the challenges of tightening emission regulations and increasing fuel costs. The MARLIN 2500 Jade design features diesel power with either scrubber or SCR exhaust treatment. The third variant is the MARLIN 2500 Green design aimed at operation in Emission Control Areas (ECAS) and offers compliance using a dual fuel or LNG fuel options. Up to 26 MARLIN 2000 Blue design container feeders are to be built at the Jin Hai shipyard, China for the Graig Group [More]
