Cummins is introducing a new high power diesel engine series comprising a V12, V16 and V20 engines of 71, 95 and 120 liter displacement respectively. Launch model is the V16 QSK 95 rated at 4,000 hp (2,985 kW) at 1,800 rpm. The second engine in the series to reach production will be the V20 cylinder QSK120 with an output of 5,000 hp (3,728 kW): the V12, as yet not defined, possibly QSK71, will have a power in the region of 3,000 hp (2,237 kW). The series has a high specification for reliability durability, economy and low emission delivering low through life cost for the engine. The new series is compliant with present and future emissions regulations, including EPA Tier 4, taking effect in 2015 using a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment designed by Cummins to replace the exhaust muffler; is capable of achieving fuel savings of 5 to 10 percent, together with a significant reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Completed in March of this year by the Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Japan, the double hull bulk coal carrier MV Initial Salute is the first ship in service fitted with selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides removal equipment. The 88,100 dwt ship with an LOA of 770 ft (235 m), is powered by a single slow speed, two stroke, MHI 6UEC60LSII rated at 11,000 kW at 105 rpm. Low-temperature exhaust gases below 570 degF (300 degC) produced by a slow speed two stroke engine were feared to cause contamination the catalysts. Improvements made to the equipment reduced the catalyst poisoning to a minimum level by suppressing the sulfur in the fuel oil to approximately 0.1 percent. The on board tests produced results that meet Tier III NOx emission controls stipulated by IMO. The results were so successful that it has been decided to extend the tests and collect more data over a longer period during normal operational service.

A testing programme with factory personnel commenced in January 20111 on a 6S46MC-C8 engine built by licensee Hitachi Zosen: the purpose was to commission the engine control system and optimize the integration of the SCR equipment. The engine develops about 7 MW at a speed of up to 129 rpm. The SCR removes NOx from the exhaust using urea as an activator. Further reduction of emissions in the exhaust system are achieved using Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) techniques. On completion of the tests, MAN Diesel & Turbo claimed a world first as the engine met all emission requirements laid down in the IMO Tier 3 regulations effective 2016.

Sauter Carbon Offset Design recently introduced the superyacht Ark Angel with a design claiming to be faster and far greener than any megayacht in her class. The 78 m hull and decks are of Carbon/Kevlar composite construction, beam is 10 m and draft 2.4 m (at 50 per cent load): the superstructure is aluminum giving a displacement of 450 tons. The total propulsive power of the ship is 4,000 kW, split between three electric pods with counter rotating propellers (CRP).
The main engines ares four 400 kW diesel electric gensets powered by Daimler Bluetec Turbo Compound DD16 engines. BlueTec emission technology is a fully automatic system used for automotive applications to comply with the more stringent (than marine) emission regulations. A generous battery capacity of 3MWh permits propulsion solely on battery electric drive, electric power generation is also by solar cells Motion Damping Regeneration.
