The new Wärtsilä 46DF engine has been specifically developed for the high-output market and is fuel flexible as well as power flexible with 1045 kW or 1145 kW cylinder power options.Compactness and reduced weight are the key attractions of the medium-speed engine, giving ship designers the option of increasing a new vessel’s revenue-earning capacity to get the most efficient propeller speed through mechanical  (reduction gearing), or through diesel-electric transmissions. Ships with Wärtsilä’s Airguard and Oceanguard propellor shaft seals have no need to change from mineral oil to a bio-degradable lubricant (formally ‘an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant’) when they're in U.S. waters as these seals meet Vessel General Permit (VGP) requirements. At slow steaming cold corrosion can occur – Castrol sees concerns by specifications given from the engine manufacturers confirmed. Many shipping owners go for slow steaming. But to avoid long term damages by slow steaming particular adjustments must be done. One aspect is the use of optimized lubricating oils. A possible problem is cold corrosion. The lubricating oil manufacturer, e.g., Castrol Marine assumes that, during slow steaming, cold corrosion can happen if lube oils with lower base numbers (BN) come together with fuels with higher sulphur content. “We always point out that oils with lower BN are unsuitable for slow steaming with modern diesel engines. Both market leading OEM’s have now created specific guide lines, which go along with our experiences”, says Castrol manager Paul Harrold. Wärtsilä receives first two orders for new Wärtsilä X62 engine

Wärtsilä has received its first two orders, a total of seven engines, for their X62 2-stroke low speed engine. The X62 is a midsize engine tailor made for Panamax Bulk Carriers, Aframax or Long Range 2 (LR2) Tankers and Container feeders. It is part of the new engine generation X 2-stroke engine family which was recently introduced to the market. According to the contracts, the main engines will be supplied to power:  - Four new LR2 tankers being built for Kyklades Maritime Corporation, a Greek ship owner, at Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd (HHI) in South Korea.  - Three bulk carriers for Suisse-Atlantique, the Switzerland based global fleet operator, to be built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard's (HMD) facilities in Vietnam.   The vessels will be of the new Ecodesign developed by the yards to reduce fuel consumption and emissions substantially compared to previous tonnage. Wärtsilä has been awarded an important retrofitting contract by the German shipyard, BVT-Brenn-und Verformungstechnik Bremen GmbH to convert the Ostfriesland, a car and passenger ferry (owned by Aktien-Gesellschaft ‘EMS’) to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel. Wärtsilä X40 Marine Diesel Engine Passes TAT in China

A Wärtsilä X40 low speed engine recently passed its Type Approval Test (TAT) in Zhouhai, China, on licensee Yuchai Marine Power’s test bed, verifying that it met all classification society requirements. Sea trials come next and then the new engine will be introduced to the market. MS Meri, a modern and environmentally friendly deck cargo vessel, is designed for global operation and a wide variety of tasks. Dockwise Vanguard is a semi-submersible heavy transport vessel (SSHTV) built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in Ulsan for the Dutch shipping company Dockwise. DOCKWISE VANGUARD is the largest heavy lift vessel in the world. The vessel has left the yard of Hyundai Heavy Industries ("HHI") on 1. of February 2013 and started its maiden trip. DOCKWISE VANGUARD will sail to the Samsung Heavy Industries ("SHI") yard in Korea to pick up the giant hull of the Jack / St Malo semi-submersible floating production facility for transportation to the US Gulf of Mexico. DOCKWISE VANGUARD was also contracted to transport the GOLIAT FPSO to northern Norway and the AASTA HANSTEEN spar platform to the Norwegian Sea. Wärtsilä's powered FPSO successfully completes full load tests

The new Petrobras-63 Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, NISA, featuring Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines, the first such ship to utilize gas engines to produce more than 100 MWe of power, has successfully completed all the required full 100% load tests. The tests were carried out at the Cosco shipyard in Dalian, China and the vessel will commence operations in Brazil’s offshore oil fields in 2013. The vessel is 342 metres in length, with a moulded breadth of 57.36 metres and a moulded depth of 28.5 metres. It was converted from a 320 000-dwt ULCC, built in 1983. NISA has a daily production capacity of 140,000 barrels of oil (bopd) and 35 million cubic metres of gas. The storage capacity by design is 1.4 million barrels and the operating depth is 1,200 metres.
