Lightweight 375 kW (500 hp) V12 Marine Diesel

At the Dusseldorf Boat Show this year there was a not so well publicized world premier of a new V12 marine diesel engine of around 375 kW (500 hp). Called the RED A03, it is a newcomer to the marine world and at present is only available as an aero engine. It was originally developed to fill a niche market between aircraft gasoline piston engines and the more expensive turboprops, and is certified as an aero engine for 368 kW take-off and 353 kW maximum continuous power.
The brainchild of Russian engineer Vladimir Raikhlin, the engine is manufactured by the RED aircraft GmbH, located in Adenau, Germany.

A marine version of the aero engine is planned, having an output power of circa 522 kW /700 hp at 3,900 rpm. Weight of the engine has not been announced but its aluminum construction with carbon fiber inlet manifolds will mean it is very light. As an indication the base aero engine weights around 250kg nett, 320 kg (705 lbs.) gross including two alternators, starters, engine and gearbox oil, heat exchanger and propeller governor.

RED A03 is a V12 liquid cooled diesel engine with 90 degrees between cylinder banks and twin double overhead camshafts. A bore of 86 mm and stroke of 88 mm gives a swept volume of 6,134 cc. The engine is electronically controlled with a common rail direct fuel injection system. Operating on JET A fuel a specific fuel consumption of 210-220 g/kWh is reported.

There are a dry sump lubrication system, twin fuel pumps, twin turbochargers and an integrated oil-water heat exchanger. Dimensions of the base engine are length 800 mm, width 840 mm and height 650 mm.

Further details of the marine version are planned to be announced later this year
