MARLIN Series of Container Feeders

A series of designs of a new generation of container feeders was unveiled this week by Wärtsilä Ship Design. The MARLIN series, as it is known, is developed in cooperation with DNV and the UK Graig shipping group, claims to be environmentally sustainable, competitively priced and fuel efficient. In money terms this equates to a 30 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency per TEU. The design benefits from an improved capacity with greater loading flexibility of different container types including a high reefer capacity.

The series is offered in three variants with the current MARLIN 2000 Blue design of approximately 2,000 TEU capacity, aimed towards the high growth inter Asia trade routes. Powered by a single two-stroke Wärtsilä 6RT-flex58T of 13,560 kW at 105 rpm the design speed is 18 kn with a max of 20 kn. Electrical power is available from three Wärtsilä 8L20 gensets of 1.4 MW each plus a single 6L20 of 1 MW.

Two other slightly larger future designs of approximately 2,500 TEU capacity have been developed to meet the challenges of tightening emission regulations and increasing fuel costs. The MARLIN 2500 Jade design features diesel power with either scrubber or SCR exhaust treatment. Powered by a single two-stroke Wärtsilä 7RT-flex58T of 15,820 kW at 105 rpm the design speed is 18 kn with a max of 20 kn. Electrical power is available from three Wärtsilä 9L20 gensets of 1.6 MW each plus a single 6L20 of 1 MW.

The third variant is the MARLIN 2500 Green design aimed at operation in Emission Control Areas (ECAS) and offers compliance using a dual fuel or LNG fuel options. Powered by twin, dual-fuel, four-stroke Wärtsilä 9L50DFs of 8,775 kW at 500 rpm, the (twin engine) design speed is 18 kn with a max of 20 kn. Electrical power is available from three Wärtsilä 9L20DF gensets of 1.5 MW each plus a single 6L20DF of 1 MW.

Up to 26 MARLIN 2000 Blue design container feeders are to be built at the Jin Hai shipyard, China for the Graig Group with the first two scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2013: further vessels are scheduled for delivery at intervals of  two and a half month.
