Boat mooring maintenance; dredging operations; dive and civil engineering work; cable and pipe laying; a floating crane platform to get in where larger, deeper-draft vessels are denied access –  all are within the scope of a multi-purpose, Jack-of-All-Trades workboat from UK shipbuilders Meercat Workboats. In addition, this workboat is fully transportable by road trailer.

Recently Meercat delivered their first asymmetric workboat prototype ‘Skua’ (twin-hulled with 3m and 4m hulls on starboard and port sides respectively) to Matt and Paul Dorman, principals of specialised mooring contractors Strangford Moorings in Northern Ireland, who specifically needed a 7.5 tonne winch and bow-roller to be permanently rigged on the centre-line in addition to a powerful ‘Iron Fist’ 40 tonne / metre marine deck crane. ‘Assymmetric’ as different length custom-built hulls turned out to be the only way to achieve this owner’s special outfitting requirement. The 17m LOA, 7m wide steel built vessel is now operating out of Strangford Lough, to provide mooring and navigational-aid deployments, maintenance, service and survey of buoys and marker posts around Ireland.

The ‘Skua’ is powered by twin 6-cylinder 8.1 liter,  four cycle in-line, direct injection water-cooled Doosan L136TI engines with turbo inter-cooler,  giving 460hp with a D-I reversing gearbox with 2.09:1 reduction ratio (both supplied by WaterMota) and a Beta Marine auxiliary generator.

Also currently under construction from Meercat Workboats is a larger 18m x 8m model workboat with an increased moulded depth. Powered by twin Doosan LO86 engines and D-I reversing gearbox with 2.09:1 reduction ratio and 40 tonne/metre marine crane, the new Meercat has a strong clear deck with a capacity of 50 tonnes and a deck loading of 6.5 tonnes per square metre.

The specifications of the slightly larger Meercat are as follows:

Length Overall: 18m
Length on deck:  17.5m
Beam: 8m
Moulded Depth: 1.750m
Displacement (nom): 55 tonnes
Deadweight (nom): 50 tonnes
